Canelo walks- now what?

In case you weren’t aware today, the big story of the day, if not 2020, in all honesty, is that Canelo Alvarez declared himself free from his promotional outlet at Golden Boy Promotions, as he looks to fight before the year is out.

The question on everyone’s mind is simple: What happens from here, and how soon will he get back into the ring?

Let me spitball a few things to ponder what may happen. Please don’t take this as official news, and the only source I have on this is the back of my head, and we all know even that isn’t too reliable but here goes…

Ben Baby over at ESPN wrote this morning that “A source told ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez that Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) and his team are targeting a return to the ring Dec. 19 against IBF super middleweight titlist Caleb Plant (20-0, 12 KOs), who fights for Premier Boxing Champions.”

Safe to assume that it won’t be on Fox as that was the problem that they were having set up the potential matchup between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.

It is also worth noting that Fox is slated to air the Big Ten Championship football game on the 19th in primetime on over the air Fox as well. So, those looking to see boxing’s biggest name will have to behind some paywall.

This brings up what I think may happen and his contest possibly taking place on Showtime instead.

Showtime has stated on December 12th, a contest from “The Fightshpere,” which includes the WBC Bantamweight contest between Nordine Oubaali and Nonito Donaire in-ring return of Jaron “Boots” Ennis. It would be interesting to see if they push this back a week to the 19th, similar to what they did to their recent pay-per-view with Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz, and relocate to a location that has fans in the State of Texas back at the Alamodome.

That proposed fight looks like a solid card already with the addition of Plant-Alvarez with fans to of course help pay for the cost of an Alvarez billing.

While the Dallas Cowboys who play in Arlington, Texas, in the National Football League and their fans will tell the season was over as soon as Dak Prescott went down with an injury, they somehow, as of this writing, have a game on Sunday night at home against the San Francisco 49ers in primetime.

While I’m 100% sure that the game gets flexed out, that doesn’t free up the venue for December 19th at AT&T Stadium.

This is far from over, and it’s pretty apparent everyone is looking at Canelo seeing if he signs on to another company or goes the one-fight deal basis that plenty of fighters have taken lately. I just know that whatever it takes for him to be in action, I’m all for it.
