Marco Antonio Barrera Breaks Down Canelo vs Crawford Fight
Before Canelo vs William Scull, Boxing News’ Andi Purewal spoke to Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera with Barrera reflecting on the Times Square card on May 2 while weighing in on Canelo vs Terence Crawford, which has now been confirmed for Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, on September 12.
Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) vs William Scull is best forgotten, and if you didn’t see it, I wouldn’t recommend watching it back. It was a sign of how the fight went that Turki Alalshikh was in the ring quickly to announce Canelo vs Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).
This mega-fight will take place at the 65,000-seater Allegiant Stadium on 12 September. The fight will be for undisputed glory, with Crawford aiming to become a three-weight undisputed champion. Crawford reacted to the announcement and said: “Everything happens for a reason and there’s a reason why I’m here. In September I’ll show the world what greatness looks like.”
After reflecting on his frustrations with the tactics of Scull, Canelo said: “Crawford is one of the best out there and I like to share with that kind of fighter.”
When talking to Boxing News before the announcement of Canelo vs Terence Crawford: “I don’t know about the weight difference. We saw Crawford fight (Israil) Madrimov at 154 I believe. He did not look like he used to, so having to jump all those weight classes to fight Canelo. It’s going to be hard, but I’ll watch it. I’ll tune in,” said Barrera.
He was then asked if he believed Canelo would stop Crawford due to the weight difference: “I don’t know if he’ll knock him out. We know Crawford has a good chin, but I do know that Canelo will most likely come out of this victorious.”
