Teofimo Lopez Gives Honest Ringside Reaction to Caleb Plant Defeat
On May 31 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Caleb Plant faced all-action Mexican Armando Resendiz for Plant’s WBA interim super middleweight title. Caleb Plant vs Resendiz produced one of the shocks of the year, with the Mexican earning a split decision victory. The bout was widely expected to be a routine win for “Sweethands.” Teofimo Lopez was ringside for the fight and shared his reaction to the upset while speaking to members of the media, including Fight Hub TV.

Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) entered the bout as the heavy favourite against Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) and started strong, looking sharp early. However, “Sweethands” couldn’t find another gear, and Resendiz quickly took control, outworking him for the remainder of the fight with relentless pressure and effective inside work.
Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) returned in the co-main event against Thomas LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs), asserting his dominance behind a sharp jab before displaying his trademark placement and power. The fight was officially stopped one second into round six due to a cut sustained by LaManna. Both Plant and Charlo were expected to win and set up a showdown later this year – but those plans appear far from certain.
Lopez Breaks Down Caleb Plant vs Resendiz
When speaking to the media, Lopez reflected on the result: “I think it should have been a unanimous decision.”
Clarifying he meant Resendiz, Lopez then added the key attributes for Resendiz that led to victory: “Bodywork, combinations. He kept being aggressive, controlling the centre of the ring.
“Caleb was doing well in the first three, four rounds, but I think those body shots really got to him.”
When asked if he thinks Plant underestimated Resendiz, Teo said: “I just think you gotta stick to what you know. If it aint broke don’t fix it. I think Caleb is a well-rounded boxer, not an inside fighter. And, the best man won tonight and that was “Toro” so congratulations to him,” said Lopez.
Lopez was asked what he felt was wrong with Plant in this fight, and the Brooklyn native said: “Something with his camp. He was gun-shy. He was gun-shy with his right hand. I think if he threw them right hands more, he would be more elusive and make the fight a bit easier.”
A defeat at this stage is a huge setback for Caleb Plant, and it remains to be seen if he can recover.
