Byron Rojas Eyes Title Shot in DAZN-Streamed July 25 Showdown

Former minimumweight world champion Byron Rojas (29-4-3, 12 KOs, 2 NC) takes on Andy Dominguez (12-1, 6 KOs) as he treads on the path towards another title shot.

Their bout headlines a July 25 Boxing Insider card at the Tropicana Atlantic City Showroom in Atlantic City, NJ. Fight fans around the world can catch the action live on DAZN.

Rojas had his first professional contest at the age of 20 in 2010. He won the WBA minimumweight title nearly six years after his debut. Now based in Holland, MI, Rojas seeks a world title at a second weight class: light flyweight. The WBA currently have him fifteenth in their rankings. Victory over Dominguez should surely help Rojas get a step closer to that second world title.

Rojas Returns on DAZN in 2025

Byron Rojas, a Nicaraguan, last fought in his home country in August 2019. That fight saw him win a unanimous decision over Eliezer Gazo. According to Dan D’Addona of the Holland Sentinel, Rojas has since moved to the United States seeking political asylum. His first fight in the country took place in 2022. A knockout win last December was Rojas’s second fight in the United States.

The clash against Andy Dominguez on Friday will be the Nicaraguan’s first of 2025. At stake is what the WBC calls its USA Silver light flyweight title. While the belt is one of many the WBC doles out, the matchup is an intriguing one. It presents an older, former world champion against a younger contender looking to make their mark in the division. Victory for Rojas could lead to even better fights at light flyweight.

What Awaits the Winner

The current world champions in the 108-lb division are Thanongsak Simsri, Erick Rosa, Panya Pradabsri, and René Santiago. While the winner of Andy Dominguez vs. Byron Rojas may not immediately face either of those four, there are still plenty of contenders who can be considered a worthy step forward. There is Jayson Vayson, a fighter from the Philippines ranked by all four title sanctioning bodies. Cristian Araneta is another Filipino contender who only just lost to Simsri in a world title contest.

The clash between Dominguez and Rojas is an opportunity for either man to establish themselves in the light flyweight division. Given that Rojas is 35, losing will prove difficult to come back from. A win, however, will bring him one step closer to the second world title that he desires.
