‘That fight is done’ – Eddie Hearn clarifies Boots Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz

Jaron Boots Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) recently signed a long-term multi-fight promotional extension with Matchroom Boxing.

The former unified welterweight champion recently announced his move to 154lbs, and will face Uisma Lima (14-1, 10 KOs) on October 11. Boots has been linked with a major clash against Vergil Ortiz Jr (23-0, 21 KOs). This rumoured bout against Ortiz is a fight many would want to see, and Eddie Hearn recently spoke to the Fight Hub TV and The Boxing Mob, revealing the latest on negotiations and Boots’ thoughts on an Ortiz Jr showdown.

Eddie Hearn talks potential Boots Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr showdown

A Boots Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz fight should catch fire quickly. Ortiz has proven time and time again what an exciting fighter he is, applying relentless pressure and power. Boots is an exceptional switch-hitter who puts his punches together impressively. His hand and foot speed are also key attributes. If this potential fight is made, it looks set to be a bout to remember.

Hearn, when speaking to the Fight Hub TV and The Boxing Mob discussed the Boots Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz rumours:

“Just to make it clear on Vergil Ortiz. We sat in a room, me, Oscar De La Hoya, Eric Gomez, and the top DAZN execs in America.

“We talked about how a deal would work with those two fighters, and we agreed on a deal. We went away – we signed a new deal with Boots. Part of that deal, within the contract, was the deal that we agreed with Golden Boy and DAZN to fight Vergil Ortiz. Boots signed it.”

Hearn discusses latest contact from Golden Boy

Revealing the latest to Fight Hub TV and The Boxing Mob, Hearn said:

“Now, we didn’t hear anything back. We told them, we’re gonna fight in October. They said they’re gonna fight in November. And we haven’t heard anything back. On Tuesday, Eric Gomez called me, and he said, look, I just wanted to let you know, we’re fighting Lubin.

“After that, we wanna get the Boots fight made. I said, ‘Well, we’re in.’ I take their word for it, and I truly believe Oscar De La Hoya wants to make great fights. But that fight is done on our side, on all the terms that we agreed with Golden Boy. That fight for me, although it doesn’t carry an official world championship, which is what we want at 54, is one of the best fights in boxing.”
