Big Ambitions and Bold Claims: Edgar Berlanga’s Defining Aim in the Canelo Álvarez Showdown
On September 14, Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will take on Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) for Alvarez’s WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles. The event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas while being promoted by Canelo Promotions – in association with Matchroom Boxing. Both fighters have had plenty to say in the build up, and “The Chosen One” has spoken to TMZ Sports and revealed his goal for the fight on September 14, and it goes further than just winning.

Berlanga Wants More Than Just the Win
Berlanga recently spoke to Dan Rafael about his feelings that the fight is actually happening: “It feels good man. I’m just living my dream of what we’ve been doing for the past 20 years.” He continued: “We got to the pinnacle of boxing.” He added: “It’s about defeating Goliath now and taking his spot and becoming the new superstar of boxing.”

This is undoubtedly a huge step up in class for the Puerto Rican as he takes on the legendary Mexican. but his confidence has never waivered in the build-up and when speaking to TMZ Sports, “The Chosen One” revealed his goal aside from winning the fight: “I definitely want to retire him, for sure.” He continued: “That is my goal.”
Speaking about Canelo, Berlanga said: “I am not trying to disrespect him. He is a legend, but at the end of the day we have got to go in there and fight, have a tussle and we have got to do what we have got to do.”
Berlanga Challenges Canelo Claims
When discussing about previous pre-fight claims from Canelo, Berlanga said: “He says how everybody wants the knockout, but are you going to deliver it or not?”

The Puerto Rican star added: “He has been saying in the last three [to] four fights that he is going to knock somebody out in the seventh or eighth round and he never did that.”
As the anticipation builds for September 14, all eyes will be on Las Vegas to see if Berlanga can shock the boxing world and dethrone Álvarez.
