Top 5 Canadian Boxing Prospects to Be On the Lookout For
Canada may not be at the top of everyone’s minds when it comes to boxing, but it is most definitely producing some talent to be on the lookout for.
Over the years, the country has produced many skilled boxers. Sam Langford, George Dixon and Yvon Durelle are just a few of those many. While those are the talents of yesteryear, there are still plenty of talented fighters who call Canada home. Without further ado, Big Fight Weekend presents five Canadian prospects to be on the lookout for in the coming years.
Top 5 Canadian Boxing Prospects to Be On the Lookout For
Wilkens Mathieu
Any list of Canadian boxing prospects today has to include Wilkens Mathieu (12-0, 8 KOs). Currently 20 years of age and operating at light heavyweight, he is promoted by Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM). The company has kept him active. In 2024 alone, Mathieu had seven fights.
Born in Québec City, Mathieu is a 6’1″ orthodox boxer. Non-Canadian boxing fans may have seen him in early 2024 on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs. Callum Smith. To get an idea of how he fights, check out this video of his professional debut.
Derek Pomerleau
A 24 year old southpaw, Derek Pomerleau (10-0, 8 KOs) generally fights at middleweight. However, his last bout saw him move up to super middleweight to take on former world title challenger Marcelo Coceres. Pomerleau wound up knocking out the Argentinian in just five rounds.
So far he has been fighting an average of three times of year, with those bouts taking place on either Groupe Yvon Michel or New Era Promotion cards. Check out the video below from the time he stopped Bervely González in just one round.
Thomas Chabot
Thomas Chabot (11-0, 8 KOs) is a southpaw fighting at super featherweight. Like Mathieu, he is also promoted by EOTTM. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted the sport and the world in 2020, Chabot had three fights that year, including one in México.
Compared to Mathieu and Pomerleau, Chabot has not been as active. In 2023, he had just one fight and in 2024, just two. He is still only 25, however, so theoretically there remains plenty of time for him to develop and become a standout in his weight class. Check out the video below to see him in action on the Christian Mbilli vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko undercard.
Bree Howling
Bree Howling (8-0, 2 KOs) had an inactive start to her boxing career, but since the start of 2024 that has started to change. Her first five fights took place in Canada over a four year span. Howling is now promoted by King’s Promotions and had three bouts in 2024.
A 26 year old bantamweight, it may not be long before she gets a world title opportunity. She is slated to fight Brittany Sims in March, a bout that will be Howling’s first 10-rounder. A solid 2025 could result in her challenging for a world title in 2026. Check out the video below from the time Howling fought Nancy Franco.
Tammara Thibeault
If the name Tammara Thibeault (1-0, 0 KOs) sounds familiar and you are not Canadian or an Olympic boxing fan, it is probably because you have heard about her from Jake Paul himself, who promotes her. As an amateur, Thibeault won gold medals at the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships. She was also an Olympian twice, representing Canada in Tokyo and Paris.
Thibeault only just made her professional debut in the final weeks of 2024. She currently fights at middleweight. According to BoxRec, only 38 women box at middleweight professionally. Given her amateur pedigree and the fact that she has the backing of Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, it may not be long before she wins a world title. Check out the video below from the time Thibeault won gold at the Pan American Games.
Currently writing out of Toronto, Canada, Saadeq first became a boxing fan while living in Doha, Qatar. Looking to become more involved in the sport, he began writing about boxing and has had work published in outlets such as Seconds Out and Boxing Social. He looks forward to continue covering boxing on Big Fight Weekend.
