Tim Tszyu Redemption: A Potential Clash with Terence Crawford
Though Australian junior middleweight star Tim Tszyu has an important bout against Bakhram Murtazaliev (22-0, 16 KOs) on October 19 for the IBF strap, it seems very apparent that the most logical, next biggest fight should be with future hall of famer Terence Crawford. The former two-division, undisputed champ has moved up and newly won the WBA 154 lb. title and needs the biggest name available. And, that’s Tszyu.
Terence Crawford vs. Tim Tszyu
Tszyu Has Had a Setback
The previously unbeaten Aussie was defeated in his last bout back in March, in a bloody split decision loss to Sebastian Fundora, and it cost him his WBO title and the chance to claim the vacant WBC strap. But, it also likely cost him a shot at Crawford later this year.
Bud instead took a large payday from Riyadh Season and battled Israil Madrimov for the WBA championship in L.A. to acquire a belt and create more leverage. While it wasn’t a sensational performance, Crawford did become a world champion in a fourth different weight division with a unanimous decision win over WBA 154 lb. title holder Madrimov.
Tszyu had been on a roll in 2023 having won a unanimous decision victory over American Tony Harrison in his homeland in March 2023 beating the former WBC light middleweight champion by TKO. This win solidified the Australian’s reputation as a top contender in the light middleweight division. Later last year he beat another American, Brian Castaño, by unanimous decision to capture the full WBO light middleweight title.

What’s Next for Tszyu?
Now, Tszyu is slated to meet Russian-born Murtazaliev, fighting out of Oxnard California is undefeated and won the vacant IBF belt with an eleventh-round knockout of Jack Culcay in Germany. Culcay-Murtazaliev occurred due to Jermell Charlo vacating his belt. Murtazaliev has power in both hands and throws everything with intent and the October fight with Tszyu promises plenty of fireworks.
A fight between Tszyu and Crawford would be highly intriguing. and a big commercial success on PPV in Tszyu’s country of Australia, where he’s the #1 boxing draw, by far. Tszyu known for his power and aggressive style, would face Crawford, renowned for his technical skill, versatility, and defensive prowess. Crawford’s ability to switch stances and hisring IQ, while Tszyu tries to come forward and use knockout power makes it very compelling. It’d be a classic clash of styles, with high stakes for both fighters.
Now, we wait for Tszyu to regain a title and leverage against Bakhram in October and see if the Saudis want to give us what seems to be a smart next fight for Crawford.
