5 Memorable Wins in Marco Antonio Barrera’s Career

Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Prince Naseem Hamed

Barrera faced Prince Nassem Hamed on April 7, 2001, for the vacant IBO world featherweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Paradise, Nevada. The Mexican fighter moved up to featherweight for the first time in his career and defied his underdog status to box brilliantly off the back foot and pick his punches exceptionally. It was a deserved unanimous decision win for the Mexican fighter, with the judges scorecards reading 116-111 and 115-112 x2.

Erik Morales III

Barrera and Erik Morales met for the third time on November 27, 2004, with their battle, standing at one win each. The third fight was an action-packed bout with these two old rivals going back and forth in what proved just what great pugilists these two were. It ultimately went to the judge’s scorecards, with one scoring 114-114, the second judge had it 115-113 with the final card reading 115-114, awarding Barrera the majority decision victory.

Johnny Tapia

On November 2, 2002, at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas Barrera took on an ageing Johnny Tapia who despite his advancing age, gave a good account of himself. The Mexican fighter was in brilliant form and boxed superbly throughout the contest. The scorecards (116-112, 118-110 and 118-110 all for Barrera) were a bit wide as Tapia did enough to win rounds but Barrera was the busier fighter throughout and didn’t waste any of his work.

Kevin Kelley

Following the win over Tapia, the “Baby Faced Assassin” faced American fighter Kevin Kelley at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. Both fighters came into the contest with winning streaks – and it was ultimately a one-sided dominant win for the Mexican as he knocked down his American opponent in the first round before knocking him down twice more in the fourth before the fight was waved off, awarding Barrera the win.

Daniel Jiménez

Barrera had his first world title shot on March 31, 1995, when he faced Daniel Jiménez at Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, California. The Mexican fighter came into this world title clash with a 34-0 record and ultimately defeated his opponent by unanimous decision – to win the WBO super bantamweight world title. The judges scorecards read 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112. This was a significant triumph for the “Baby Faced Assassin,” which set him on a memorable journey for the rest of his career.
