The Last Three Fights of Katie Taylor
The Last Three Fights of Katie Taylor
Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) has accomplished much in her time as a boxer.
As an amateur, she won Olympic gold in 2012 and was a five-time World Championships gold medalist. Once Taylor made the move to the professional ranks, she became an undisputed world champion at lightweight and now holds that distinction at super lightweight. On July 11 she will face Amanda Serrano for a third time in a much anticipated contest.
Ahead of that bout on Friday, Big Fight Weekend takes a look at the last three fights of the Irish boxing star.
The Last Three Fights of Katie Taylor
Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano 2
Although Taylor won her second fight against Serrano via unanimous decision, it was close on the scorecards. All three judges scored the contest 95-94. The win allowed Taylor to retain her undisputed super lightweight championship. It was her first defence of it and she did so at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson that was broadcast on Netflix.
Taylor appeared to have stunned by an overhand left late in the opening round. Subsequent rounds saw her struggle with Serrano’s pressure. In round four, the Puerto Rican was cut by the right eye following an accidental headbutt. Taylor stuck to boxing and moving for most of the bout and Serrano’s cut did worsen as the fight went on. From the seventh round onwards, both women went toe-to-toe. Despite losing a point in the eighth for excessive headbutting, Taylor had done enough over ten to convince the judges that she was the victor.
Chantelle Cameron vs. Katie Taylor 2
Taylor’s second fight againt Cameron was a triumph and it made her the undisputed super lightweight champion on home soil. She won via majority decision in a contest that took place at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, and was broadcast around the world on DAZN. While one judge saw the fight 95-95, the other two had it 98-92 and 96-94.
In the early stages of the bout, Taylor was able to trade on the inside and box on the back foot. As the fight entered the middle round Cameron kept coming forward. Despite tiring, Taylor stayed in the pocket and continued exchanging with her opponent. Both women threw everything they had in the last few rounds, but it was the Irish fighter wound up having her hand raised when the scores were read.
Chantelle Cameron vs. Katie Taylor
Taylor’s first fight as a professional in Ireland did not go as well as she had hoped. In her return to super lightweight she sought to become undisputed champion by defeating Cameron. Instead, Taylor lost via majority decision. While one judge saw the clash 95-95, the other two saw it 96-94 for Cameron. The fight took place at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, and was broadcast on DAZN.
Cameron was aggressive throughout the bout and Taylor struggled with that. The English fighter kept coming forward and landing punches on the inside. Despite Taylor’s resistance, she was not able to entirely deal with the inside work that she kept getting hit with nor gain control of proceedings. In spite of the one scorecard that had it a draw, it was clear after 10 rounds that Cameron had done more than enough to retain her undisputed championship.
