The weekly title fight roundup: draws, defenses, and knockouts

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of three recaps. In the United States, two middleweight titles remained vacant following a majority draw. Elsewhere in the United States, a reigning featherweight champion made a successful defence. In Canada, a unified light flyweight champion added a third title to her collection.

World title fights roundup – Olivia Curry vs. Kaye Scott fight recap

Olivia Curry (7-2-2, 2 KOs) and Kaye Scott (4-1-1, 0 KOs) fought to a majority draw in their world title encounter.

While one judge had it 98-92 for Scott, the other two saw it 95-95. As a result, the WBA and WBC middleweight world titles that were at stake remained vacant.

The fight took place on a September 19 Salita Promotions card at the Fox Theater in Detroit, MI. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on DAZN.

The clash was an entertaining one from start to finish. Scott dominated the first two rounds thanks to her better boxing ability. However, Curry pressed forward with rugged determination till the very end. It gave her moments of success, but Scott still appeared to do the cleaner work over 10 rounds. Despite that, two judges had the contest a draw in the end.

The desire to run it back appears to be there, possibly before the year’s end. Fight fans can expect more details on that in the coming months.

Sara Bailey vs. Evelin Bermúdez fight recap

Evelin Bermúdez (22-1-1, 8 KOs) stunned those in attendance with a first round technical knockout of Sara Bailey (6-1, 0 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 1:47. Bermúdez retained her IBF and WBO light flyweight world titles with the victory. She is also now the WBA world champion.

The fight headlined a September 20 United Boxing Promotions (UBP) card at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ottawa, Canada. Fight fans in the country could catch the action live on TSN+. Those in Argentina were able to do so with TyC Sports.

With less than 40 seconds to go in round one, Bermudez landed a chopping right hand to the head that sent her opponent down. Bailey got up, but was clearly on shaky legs. Once the fight resumed, Bermudez landed a one-two upstairs that resulted in a second knockdown. Referee Albert Padulo Jr. began a count but soon terminated it when Bailey struggled to get to her feet.

Tiara Brown vs. Emma Gongora fight recap

Tiara Brown (20-0, 11 KOs) retained her featherweight championship with a dominant unanimous decision win against Emma Gongora (10-4-1, 1 KO).

Scores for their bout were 100-90 and 98-92 (x2). Brown retained her WBC world title with the win. She won the belt earlier this year in Australia against Skye Nicolson.

The clash took place on a September 20 Overtime Boxing card at the Bayou Music Center in Houston, TX. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on DAZN.

Gongora began the fight well, closing the distance and unleashing punches to the body in the opening round. This prevented the reigning champion from boxing at range. Brown made the necessary adjustments in round two. She increased her punch output and started to land the heavier shots, something that Gongora struggled to respond to. Despite being on the receiving end of heavy punishment, the challenger was able to stay on her feet till the final bell but could not avoid the wide loss on the scorecards.
