George Groves Names ‘The Future of Female Boxing’

Women’s boxing experienced a significant boost during the COVID-19 pandemic, with numerous TV cards, leaving many excited about the future. Over the last 12-18 months, many female fighters have been left frustrated by inactivity. However, with Most Valuable Promotions signing a number of big names, it feels that the future is bright, with many active and emerging. George Groves has spoken to Adventure Gamers, revealing he believes Caroline Dubois is “the future of female boxing.”

Female Boxing Begins to Flourish Once Again

George Groves Praises Caroline Dubois

Female boxing feels like it is beginning to progress once again, with Jake Paul and MVP at the forefront. They recently hosted an all-women’s card at Madison Square Garden, headlined by Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3. Despite losing some female fighters, Matchroom recently signed the standout amateur Tiah-Mai Ayton (1-0, 1 KO), who will have her second pro fight on the Pat McCormack vs Miguel Parra undercard on September 6.

Boxxer, having resolved their recent broadcasting troubles with a BBC deal, also have one of the best women’s fighters in Caroline Dubois, the current WBC lightweight world champion. Groves made it clear he sees Dubois as the future of female boxing:

“The future of female boxing, for me, is Caroline Dubois, so far, so good in her career. Her brother’s a former heavyweight champion, so you know, success runs in the family. Got the lineage, the bloodline. There’s gonna be loads coming through. You know, when they first started, everyone was excited, but there wasn’t enough competition. But now, certainly in Britain, there’s a lot of talented females coming through.”

Katie Taylor and the Future of Female Boxing

Groves also praised the impact of Katie Taylor, calling her a pioneer for the sport.

“Obviously you’ve got your Shield and Taylor, but I’m trying to not be so obvious. Nah, I can’t think of anyone to top Katie Taylor. She was an iconic, big champion and a pioneer for females, certainly this side of the pond. Yeah, Katie Taylor. There’s gonna be loads coming through. It feels like there’s opposition for the females.

“You know, when they first started breaking from getting the TV slots, let’s be honest, it was COVID times and female boxing was cheaper than male boxers. So they were getting the TV slots for a new audience. Everyone was excited, but there wasn’t enough competition, so they were just really skillful ladies against someone like Browe from Guadalajara. But now, certainly in Britain, there’s a lot of talented females coming through.”
