Audacious Leap into New Territory Revealed for David Morrell

The next fight for the big-punching Cuban super middleweight and WBA regular champion David Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) has been revealed, with Dan Rafael reporting on his Fight Freaks Unite Substack that the 26-year-old will be moving up to light heavyweight to take on Radivoje Kalajdzic (29-2, 21 KOs) on one of the PBC cards in June on Prime Video or Prime Video PPV.

David Morrell Next Fight: WBA Situation Explained

The WBA have agreed to sanction the bout between Morrell and Kalajdzic for the regular 175 title despite their policy to not create any more new secondary world titles. The organisation have revealed that a request came from TGB Promotions, which is Morrell’s co-promoter and reveals why they approved the contest for the 175 regular belt: “The approval was made with specific conditions, among which is that Morrell must vacate his super middleweight title if he wins his 175-pound bout.”

The main belts at light heavyweight are all tied up and due to go on the line when Artur Beterbiev and WBA titlist Dmitry Bivol meet in their highly anticipated undisputed clash on June 1. The approval for Morrell to move up in weight means that the WBA now recognise Edgar Berlanga as its super middleweight mandatory challenger, who is fresh from a sixth-round knockout of Padraig McCrory in a final eliminator on February 24.

Morrell vs. Kalajdzic

Morrell is one of the most gifted prospects in boxing and has impressed with his hand speed and lightning reflexes. He shows a poise that Cuban boxers possess in abundance. He carries plenty of power, as seen by his KO wins against Aidos YerbossynulyAlantez Fox and last time out against Sena Agbeko.

Kalajdzic is on a five-fight winning streak after losing to Artur Beterbiev in 2019. Last time out, he won with a final-round KO vs. Sullivan Barrera. Even though it’s a new weight for Morrell, it’s hard to look past a resounding win for the heavy-handed Cuban.
